Happy Track Out!!! I hope everyone has a great 3 weeks. In your child's folder there are some OPTIONAL Math Homework sheets and 3 of "Mrs. Chern's Special Books" for  your child to read if they would like. These are optional; however, I told them that when they were missing school they could do some math and reading. They can also write about the books they are reading. We have learned to:

  • make Circle Maps about characters
  • make Bubble Maps about what we learn from a non-fiction text
  • make Flow Maps to write about the major events in sequence using key details
  • write about the lesson the character learns and how we can learn from them too
I would love to read their thoughts when we get back if they choose to write about any of the books they read (mine or ones of their own). See everyone in 3 weeks!

Spelling and Syallable types

Wondering how you can help your child with spelling and reading? Visit the following link to get information about the first two syllable types your student will learn. Currently we are focused on Closed Syllables

The first video will teach parents and children. The second video is geared more towards chidren.

Because the focus is on teaching your child the bigger picture about how to spell and read words I will only send home the tricky and story words for your child to practice each week. Once they know the sounds letters make and the patterns in the syllable types they will be able to read and write any word they come across. Amazing!

August 8th newsletter

I have been working to add things to the blog and need some feedback from you. Please take a moment to participate in the poll. It will help me to make sure that you can access information and can stay abreast of what is happening in our classroom.

A few things I added:

  • links to articles
  • a wish list
  • ways to help your child build handwriting
  • new newsletters in the newsletter tab
I am trying to decide if I should just post all information as a "post" or if I should make tabs for items. Your feedback will really help me. By the way...

Wasn't sure if I had mentioned that before!
