Track Out Week...

Info...

Tomorrow we will visit the Book Fair when we return from our Field Trip so the kids have a chance to preview what is being sold. They will write a list of books they would like to have. Tomorrow night is also our Media by Moonlight event. I hope you can come by and check out how great the library looks. The monster theme is adorable. You can come then to purchase books or, if you prefer, you can send your child in with money on Wednesday and I will bring them by the book fair to purchase books. There are some great selections this year! No homework this week. We will not resume homework until our first full week of school when we track back in.

Wednesday we have a day of projects, projects, projects. We will meet in our classroom and then we are off the the Media center to publish books digitally with the help of Mrs. Kardas' 5th grade class. We will also spend time in the Maker Space working on a class bulletin board to teach others how we figured out how many letters all the children in 1st grade have in their first name. I also have a few other projects planned if we have enough time. We will not be in our classroom on Wednesday.
Optional Track Our work will go home on Wednesday. These are optional... however, if your child completes:1) the math packet they can earn a Homework Pass for one full day's  homework. 2) the extra reading assignment they can earn a lunch bunch with an extra yummy SURPRISE snack! One of the major hurdles for us to get to for Mid Year Reading Benchmarks is the ability to read and answer written questions independently (I cannot help them in any way to read or answer these questions). This is a HUGE jump for 1st graders and we work everyday to make this goal attainable. We will start reading assessments in December. To keep your child practicing I encourage them to complete the extra reading. Remind them to answer in complete sentences. I will also send home the November Book It Log so you can get started on earning your free pizza from Pizza Hut. Thank you Pizza Hut for encouraging our children to read everyday! One of our sweet classmates will be moving during track out. We wish the Jones Family good luck in their new home. We will miss you!

Tomorrow is our Field Trip to Marbles Museum. Check your child's D.O.T. for a reminder slip about lunch.

Happy Track Out...

We made it to our first track out! Yea! When your child gets home please check their D.O.T. for their Mclass Home Connect letter. This will summarize the reading assessments your child completed in the last the weeks and give you great ideas for next steps to support your child grow even further as a reader.

In addition you will find the Summer Track Out Challenge and two sets of math cards. These are 100% OPTIONAL! However, if the students complete these they will get rewarded when we track back in. If your child chooses to complete the reading challenge they will earn a popsicle and if they complete the math challenge will earn a homework pass. Please do not stress if you can not do these. This is your vacation time so I completely understand if your child does not want to complete them. But... if your child happens to say... "I'm bored" now you have things you can suggest they do.

Have a great track out. Enjoy, rest, relax and be safe! See you in 3!

~Mrs. Chern

P.S. Students this is for you!!!!!! Here are the results of our Tye-Dye T-shirt vote. Which two colors will our shirts be? Can you use this data to figure it out?

First day success...

We made it! Our first day of first grade was... a success! Many thanks for all the supplies that came in. The kids are happy and excited and so am I. Don't forget that Open House is on Thursday. From 5:30-6:00 there is a PTA meeting. If you are not already a member please consider joining. They do the most most wonderful things for our school. From 6:00-7:00 you may visit classrooms. We are going to keep things informal for most of the session. I will do a formal "Open House Speech" from 6:15-6:30 if you are looking for something a bit more formal.  I will have our blog up, you can register to volunteer and you will get a chance to check out what a first grade classroom looks like. I will be available to answer questions and look forward to meeting you.

Newsletter (quick note format)...

First off, many thank you's for all the wonderful things this week during Teacher Appreciation Week. I truly enjoyed the notes, flowers, treats and school supplies. The playground equipment was a hit for not only our class but our other 1st grade friends. I truly appreciate you generosity. The kids were more excited than I was.

No homework this week!

I hope all our wonderful moms had a great Mother's Day. The kids really enjoyed making you something special.

Tuesday is Track Out day and our Field Trip to the museum. We still have 3 slots open so if you want to join us please sign up! We will leave school as soon as possible. We are shooting for between 9:20-9:30.We will eat a snack at the museum and have lunch when we return to school. Please be sure to pack your child a healthy and hearty snack to keep their bellies full.

Student Led conferences are this week. If you have not signed up yet the link was emailed to you and can also be found on an earlier post on the blog. Remember that you have to have your child with you as they will lead the conference.

I will send home a math track out packet. This is, of course, optional. This is a good way to keep skills sharp as we prepare to take our Summative Math Assessment when we track back in. As always, I encourage your child to read, read, read. Final mCLASS reading assessments will be done by Mrs. Varner when we track back in. I will be doing her class. It is state mandated that we cannot assess our own students. Continuing to read over track out will help your child retain their skills and stamina so they will be ready to go when we get back to school. We have been working quite a bit in Moby Max. They have self paced reading and math lessons for your child to do online. The students have really seemed to enjoy them. This program, as well as the other programs on our blog, can be done over track out as well. Have a great track out. It hardly seems possible that when we track back in we have only 4 short weeks left in 1st grade. Time flies fast when you are having fun.

Happy snow day 1st graders...

It's my favorite kind of weather today and the weather forecasters say there is more on the way. How much snow has fallen at your house? Measure it and comment below. Here is what I measured at my house.
February 24, 2015 10:00 am  1/2 inch

February 24, 2015 1:00 pm 1 inch

Stay tuned. I'll be doing some more measuring as more snow falls. The forecasters say we could get 3 to 6 inches. What do you think?

Happy Valentines Day and Happy Track Out...

I hope everyone has a wonderful Valentines Day and a great track out. This track out your child brought home a math packet they can do if they want. It is 100% optional but I would recommend picking and choosing activities that may have shown up on the interim of areas to continue working on. It has:

  • Attribute shape cards so they can teach you how to make Attribute Trains.
  • Shapes to cut out to create other shapes by solving questions.
  • Some word problems to solve.
  • One sheet working on doubles. Doubles is new learning for us so check out the video tab on our blog so your child can sing our Doubles songs and become fluent with them.
Over track out your child has been given a challenge. When we return we want every student to be a Shoe Tying Super Hero. Here is a great video that shows an easy way to teach your child to tie their shoes.

How to learn to tie your shoes in 5 quick minutes!

Of course be sure to read each day and don't forget to visit the links on our blog. Lexia is a great thing to keep your child doing over track out. Big Universe had tons of online books for your child to read on tons of topics. Pebble Go has great nonfiction choices.

Have a great track out and see you in 3 weeks!
