notebook icon.jpgA note from Mrs. Chern…. Thank you to everyone for helping your child with their Family
Celebrations project. They are amazing!!!! And the kids are very proud of them. I will send
interims home on Monday. Please look for them in your child’s D.O.T. notebook. Lots of
assessments have been added to the D.O.T. notebook so check them out so you can get an idea
of how your child is progressing.

Reading: Determining if we learn information from text or text features, identifying main idea
and key details
Writing: Learning the part of an informational writing piece, brainstorming ideas, choosing
ideas and beginning a rough draft.
Spelling: Unit 16
Math: the rules of measuring, measuring with accuracy
Social Studies: traditions from different cultures

This week’s trait is SELF CONTROL Click here to learn more. This week’s challenge is
…. Do something this week that you have to do even though you don’t like it. Draw and write
about what you had to do, how you felt before, during, and after.


 There is a reading passage and questions. Remember Monday (read),
Tuesday (read and question 1), Wednesday (read), Thursday (read and question 2). Fluency is
key. For Math there are two sets of word problems practicing different strategies.. One page
practices using 10 frames and crossing out and the other is using a number line.  


Upcoming Events…

  • 12/14 Winter Learning Experience planned  by our amazing room mom’s from 10:30-11:00. Lunch will be provided.
  • 12/21 Early Release. School out at 1:15.
  • 12/24-1/1 Winter Break. No school.

notebook icon.jpgA note from Mrs. Chern…. Please welcome the Marriott family to our class. They are
coming to Brassfield from Ohio. We are happy to have you joining our class community. We are
settling nicely into our new space and picking up where we left off in October. Next week we
will continue this week’s standards since this has been a short week for us. I will send home
Scholastic Catalogs to order books on Monday. I would like the orders to be made by Dec. 4th
so I can order and get books before winter break. This is especially important if you are
planning to get your children books for the holidays. Some of the 1st grade classes do a
Positivity Project Challenge each week. See our new Positivity Project Challenge section of our
newsletter and learn more about what trait we are studying each week.

Reading: Text Features and what we learn from them (table of contents, photographs,
headings, bold print, glossary, captions, punctuation guide, timeline, labels, maps)
Writing: Putting opinion plan into writing a friendly letter
Spelling: Unit 13
Math:  place value, comparing numbers using place value
Science: Performance task and assessment of unit

notebook icon.jpgA note from Mrs. Chern…. Report Cards will go home Monday. Please sign the gold
envelope and return it. The report card inside is for you to keep. Our field trip to the play is
already rescheduled for March 12th. We will see The Cat in the Hat. Picture make-ups are this
upcoming week. Please let me know if you need retakes. If your child was absent when we
took pictures earlier in the year they will take them Tuesday.  If you have not already signed up
for a conference for next week please do so ASAP. Click HERE to sign up. The kids are excited
about sharing their learning. Show them some grace this first time around. With missing two
days of school we are a teeny tiny bit behind and won't get the practice time in that I had
planned.

words and what they mean.
Writing: Choosing an idea, writing an opinion, choosing strong reasons, and adding closure
Spelling: Unit 12
Math:  place value, solving word problems using place value
Science: The features of the sun, patterns of the sun, does the sun move?


There is a passage again with two questions. Please remember to practice
reading the passage every night to improve fluency. The children will practice comparing
numbers with word problems.

notebook icon.jpgA note from Mrs. Chern…. Report Cards will go home next week sometime. I am still
having a difficult time getting grades to populate and comments to show. Our field trip was a
blast. We got to do some learning about how different countries around the world celebrate
special holidays. We will story more of this ½ way through 2nd quarter. Next week we will get
to see Pete The Cat on Thursday. We have read tons of Pete the Cat books so it will be amazing
to see it come to life. Student Led Conference sign up’s will be coming home as well. They will
be during the week of Oct. 15th.

numbers and finding the difference. This is done through pictures not equations. Let me know
if your child is struggling and you need more information about this.

Readvolution is up and running...

Please check your child's DOT notebook for information about...
Readvolution.

I showed the kids how to get to log on an easier way then what is described in the letter. Here are the direction:


  1. Go to the Brassfield Website
  2. Scroll down and click on the "Wake ID" button
  3. Select Student from the drop down menu
  4. Enter your students Wake ID which is in their DOT notebook 
  5. Click to continue
  6. Enter their password which is also in their DOT notebook
  7. Click the Readvolution box
  8. Click enter. From there you will just click the add a book button. This video will show you how.
