for the week of Sept. 22
Quarter 1  Week 8

notebook icon.jpgA note from Mrs. Chern…. Believe it or not we are about to start the last week of the
1st quarter. This week I will do comprehension assessments and math assessments.
I will let you know when they are in your child’s D.O.T. book for review. Thank you to
all who returned your interim cover sheet. PowerSchools is still working on the math
section. We are hopeful that will be up and running for report cards. Always check the
D.O.T. for assessments to see how your child is doing. I have told them never to be afraid to not know how to do something and that assessments help me to know what
my next steps for teaching them will be. I constantly tell them it is okay to make a
mistake or not know how. It is not okay not to try. I will reteach as necessary. But it is
their job to pay attention, work hard, engage in instruction and be accountable for
completing work so they can become stronger students. Mrs. Chern is NEVER upset
if we haven’t figured out something yet academically or behaviorally. We will work
together to fix it.

notebook icon.jpgUpcoming Week’s Standards…
Reading: Comprehension assessments
Writing: Publishing
Spelling: Unit 9
Math:  Missing Addends with word problems, Math assessments solving word problems using
multiple strategies

There is a passage again with two questions. Please remember to practice
reading the passage every night to improve fluency. Please look at the second page for math
1st before you do the 1st page. They got stapled in the wrong order. This is really hard for the
kids at times so read each sentence to a problem one at a time. Ask your child to explain how to
play “BET LINES” while they do this homework. .

Quarter 1  Week 5

notebook icon.jpgA note from Mrs. Chern…. We have reached mid quarter, which usually means an interim would go home. Currently PowerSchools and MClass have been updating their systems and it has caused a bit of a delay in me being able to do reading assessments and enter grades for subject areas to create reports for you. Please see your child’s D.O.T. notebook. In each section you will find assessments. Anything in the binder with a circle A and number is an assessment item. 3 is consistently efficient at standard, 2 is still working on mastery of that standard, and a 1 means they do not have command of that standard yet. This will give you an idea of what your child’s understanding of the standards that have been taught so far are. I will get the interims and Home Connect letters out to you as soon as each platform is updated and ready for teacher use.
There will be a change in how DOJO and Pawsitive Paws is going to work. I was trying to enter all the positive paws students earn in different places and it has gotten a bit overwhelming. They are just so so so awesome. Sooooo…. DOJO will be for classroom behavior only and can be turned in for class rewards. Pawsitive Paws will be for all other settings at school and will be turned in for items from the school WooHoo Wagon.
notebook icon.jpgUpcoming Week’s Standards…
Reading: Continue reading assessments, comparing fiction and non-fiction texts, fiction and non-fiction retelilng assessment
Writing: Conventions Checklist: How do we make writing easy for others to read? Spacing, proper letter formation

Math:  Addition and Subtraction Strategies
Science: Begin Force and Motion unit, How does force make an object move? Can an object move without force?

There is a passage again with two questions. Please remember to practice reading the passage every night to improve fluency. Math consists of two sheets to practice the “Counting Up” strategy we learned. There is an explanation of the strategy with the homework papers for you to review.
