Quarter 1 Week 1
News from the week of July 9
A note from Mrs. Chern…
WOW! What a great week we have had together. It has been so nice meeting new friends and learning about our new classroom space. We have learned about being Brassfield B.E.A.R.S. and earning tons of Pawsitive Paws. Hopefully your child has brought home their
paws to show you what they turned them in for. We have started launching work in
Writing, Letterland, Reading, and Social Studies. We are very excited for OPEN
HOUSE Wednesday, July 17th from 5:30-7:00. This will give you an opportunity to
hear what your child will be learning this year and ask questions. Lots of procedural
things will begin next week with communication between home and school. The focus
for this week was to get comfortable with our new class. Each week I will post a
newsletter on our class blog (mrscherns1stgrade.blogspot.com). Please
bookmark/favorite this page so you can keep up with classroom happenings. The thing
I love most about using this blog is the amount of information I can share with you. I
will also use Class DOJO. It is a class/behavior management communication tool. You
will receive instructions on how to sign up. It allows for immediate alerts so there is
no need to continually log into email accounts.

Upcoming Week’s Standards…
Reading: What do we read? How do we read? Setting a purpose for reading.
What does real reading look like?
Writing: Brainstorming Small Moment ideas, What is narrative writing? How to
plan a story with a beginning, middle and end.
Spelling: Unit 2
Math: Data collection. PCAI (Pose, Collect, Analyze, Interpret)
Social Studies: We are citizens of a community. Communities have rules to keep
things safe, fair and 'resolve conflict.

After much thought, research and debate 1st grade has decided not to do
homework this year. HOWEVER, we do want to encourage a love of learning
so there will be a monthly reading 'challenge for you and your child to
participate in that will support the curriculum focus for that 'month. The Math
Department provides homework that goes along with lessons at school. These will 'be sent home
periodically as they come up and they are completely OPTIONAL. You can choose to 'do them at
home if you want to have your child show you what they are learning in school. You DO NOT need
to return completed sheets to school. Instead foster that love of learning. Find things that interest your child and go with it. Read about it, experiment with it, build it, talk about it, share it with others. It’s
about QUALITY time together not the quantity of worksheets you can complete each week. Love of learning is going to make your child a stronger
student than completing worksheets.
